Kayfabe-breaking moment? Smiling Dominik Mysterio spotted hanging out with unmasked Rey Mysterio

June 2024 · 2 minute read

Kayfabe has lost its meaning in the modern era of professional wrestling. Due to social media and the internet, it is difficult for wrestlers to maintain their respective on-screen characters away from the ring. As such, a photo of Dominik Mysterio and Rey Mysterio during the festive season has gone viral online.

The image shows the unmasked legend with his son. While it is normal for a father-son duo to spend time together, there is no love lost between Rey and Dominik. This kicked off at the Clash At The Castle PLE in 2022, where the 26-year-old shockingly betrayed his own father. Therefore, tensions in the Mysterio family started to flare, which led to a WrestleMania showdown between both superstars.

Despite losing the bout, Dominik Mysterio has continued to insult his father on numerous occasions. Moreover, the former North American Champion always refers to the Hall of Famer as a “deadbeat” dad. Meanwhile, Rey is no stranger to taking shots against the Judgment Day member as well. Needless to say, the animosity between father and son will take longer to resolve than expected.

Currently, the pair are on opposite sides of brands in WWE. Dominik Mysterio competes on Raw, while Rey Mysterio is exclusively signed to SmackDown. As a result, there have been little to no interactions between them since their battle at the Showcase of Immortals.

Rey Mysterio believes there is still hope for Dominik Mysterio

Without a doubt, Dominik Mysterio had a tremendous year in the WWE. The third-generation superstar broke free from the shadow of his father, Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio. Recently, the latter commented on his son’s accomplishments since Dom’s betrayal.

On the ‘Absolute Best of 2023’ SmackDown edition, the Luchador legend commented on his year in the WWE. During the interview, Rey acknowledged Dominik’s achievements. However, the former World Champion stated that he hopes his son somehow “finds his way.”

I truly hope so as a father that he finds his way. I mean, deep down inside I give him credit for what he’s accomplished. He’s my son, he turned his back on me, but overall his growth in that ring has been tremendous.

“Dirty” Dom is arguably the most hated superstar, and his ability to garner heat easily has been vocally appreciated by fans and other wrestlers as well. Furthermore, the 26-year-old captured his first singles title, claiming the NXT North American Championship in July. It will be interesting to see what’s in store for Dominik in 2024.
