CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s been a Charlotte tradition for local families for more than three decades, but, this year, the Charlotte Turkey Trot in SouthPark is going virtual because of COVID-19.

In a message posted to the event’s website, organizers announced their decision: “With an abundance of caution, we are not going to gather at SouthPark Mall this Thanksgiving. However, we will keep the tradition of a healthy run and walk on Thanksgiving morning going with a pandemic flair – 2020 will be a virtual Turkey Trot.”

Runners, walkers and trotters can participate in this year’s virtual event by registering and getting out on Thanksgiving Day.

Registration costs $25 for adults and $20 for children age 12 and younger. Registration includes a long-sleeve 2020 Turkey Trot event T-shirt, an official race bib and a finishers' medallion.

Also new this year and keeping with the spirit of the holiday, organizers have announced a partnership with Charlotte-based charity Samaritan’s Feet to provide shoes for underprivileged children in the region. Every corporate partner involved with the event is donating with the goal of providing 500 pairs of shoes.

Listed as one of the 30 Best Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trots in America, the Charlotte Turkey Trot is one of the largest road races in North Carolina with more than 9,000 participants.
